Visit Americanexpress.com and login to the summary of accounts pages. On the summary page, you’ll find a link as; Pay Bill. This link when clicked will lead you through a series of screens which will enable you to submit the payment online.
To begin with, all you need is to add a bank account from which you intend to pay the bill. This can be accomplished by clicking on the “add a bank link”. A message will be prompted for you to select the type of bank account; personal or business. Then, along with the bank account number, enter 9 digit routing & transit number, which is series of numbers given at the bottom-left corner of paper check. The former series of numbers is routing transit number that indicates your banking organization.
While the latter one is account number of financial institution. A third set of number is also there which represents your actual check number; however, it is not required during the setup process. Make sure that the bank account number you enter here must be checking account, because this is the only account acceptable by American Express to create set-up for electronic bill payment.
Once you are done with establishment of payment account, you have freedom to choose between the multiple options that whether you intend to pay;
- A minimum amount that is due on your bill
- Current balance, or
- Any other amount
The payment date is by default set to the present day, thus you do not need have any option to select a future date for electronic payment.
When you’ll click on continue tab, a verification screen will be displayed as a confirmation of your electronic payment instructions. You need to agree to terms and conditions presented to submit payment for processing. A confirmation message via email containing electronic payment details will be sent to you.
Keep a note that any payments that are made after 08:00pm Mountain Standard Time will be credited on the next day.
To view a historical record of payments made to or received by American express, you can go to the payment link given on account home page. It will show you complete details of payment date, payment status, mode of payment and amount paid.
Additionally, American Express offers an option to setup Autopay. If you wish to use this option, you need to;
- Provide bank account for which you intend to have autopay draft made from every month
- How much you would like to pay each month (full new balance, min. payment due, or a fixed dollar amount), and
- Select number of days that should pass after your statement closing date prior to execution of electronic payment instructions. You may choose anywhere between 15-25 days after statement closing date.
If you no longer wish to continue autopay enrollment, simply re-visit American Express website and turn the service off.
Once, American Express offered service which allowed you to pay other billers as well on their site. This service was termed as American Express Bill Pay; however, it was discontinued by the American Express itself in February, 2014.
